Why change the name of the ministry?
God has used this ministry to empower young people to continually live and share their faith in the local and global communities they serve since 2007. The ministry has always focused on helping young people live the word of God, share the Gospel of Jesus, and serve the Church!
Over the years we have found that our name, Youth Missions International, created a box for the ministry. In people's minds, Youth Missions International meant the ministry only participated in international short-term youth mission trips. A short-term international mission trip is the tool that YMI began with, and we are pleased to still be using that same tool to serve churches around the world today.
However, the opportunities for fulfilling our mission are growing. The tools have expanded, but our name keeps drawing people to the singular tool of short-term mission trips.
We began discussing this issue in 2015, but we are now at a point where it is essential for us to make a name change. We are moving forward with a new name that doesn’t point people to the tool, but instead explains how we see the ministry moving forward. Our name is changing to Base Ministry, but our mission of empowering young people to continually live and share their faith in the global communities they serve has not and will not change. We will do the same ministry as before, but under a name that focuses on what we are praying to accomplish in partnership with local churches.
So what does the name Base Ministry mean?
Most great things start with a good base. Architects start with a foundation, dynastic sports programs have a core of great players and coaches, and chefs use flavor bases for their best dishes.
We believe leadership in the church is the same. A good foundation of leadership in the church can not only deepen what young people in the church are learning but also add to the core of a missional team that is sharing their faith and serving Jesus Christ.
We are excited to partner with the church to be a part of God working in individual lives and in the life of the church. Through relying on the solid base of Scripture and the Gospel of Jesus Christ, we can impart foundational truths in how people can live, share, and serve. Training through authentic ministry can give them a solid base for them to serve in their local church and lead others to do the same.
We are excited to get out of the box. Base Ministry (formerly Youth Missions International) will continue to focus on empowering young people to live and share their faith in the global communities they serve. We will just have a different name that lays out our vision to see the next generation of leaders within the church developed and empowered as disciple-makers through service.
